Garden Techniques - How To Deal With Frost Damaged Plants

Spring is a time when you can often get caught out by an unexpected frost. We have had a couple of vicious frosts after relatively balmy days, and this can be lethal for plants that get caught and are unprotected too. How do you recognise the signs, and what can you do?

If wilting leaves appear with no good explanation or they have a water logged look, this can be a sign that your plant is suffering from frost damage and needs some help. Another symptom of frost damage can be the sudden appearance of brown areas on the leaves. You should also watch out for evidence that the new shoots on your plants are starting to die back. If the plants are spring flowering and their flowers don't open completely or they become discolored and start to die off, then you can be fairly sure that frost damage has occurred.

Sadly, there is no treatment for frost damage. Once it has occurred you can do little to save your plant if the damage is severe. You should remove the damaged parts of your plant so it can concentrate on the healthier parts. It also makes the plant look a great deal healthier. You will need to take special care if there is a chance of more frosts as the plant will be even more than usually vulnerable. If the damage hasn't been too severe you may be able to save the plant, however unless it shows signs of growth and recovery fairly quickly it is better to remove it and plant something new at a suitable time. You may not always notice frost damage immediately, especially if the frost has been a light one so you need to be vigilant for a few days after any frost, mild or hard.

There are a number of ways to protect against frost damage, one of the best ways to reduce the possible effects of a frost on your garden is to choose the most suitable plants for your climate conditions. If you are living in an area that is subject to frosts then you should always try and choose plants that are frost-tolerant. If you plant in areas that are less exposed and sheltered from frosts you will increase the chances of saving plants that might otherwise be killed by the sudden drops in temperature. However this is not always practical as it would restrict the variety of plants that we could have in our gardens which would be a tragedy.

If you suspect there is going to be a frost you can take precautions by protecting your plants. Anything in pots can be moved to a sheltered area where the frost won't bite. You can protect your plants by wrapping them in Hessian, newspaper or garden fleece until the risk of frost has passed. It is a painfully slow process but worth it for any special or precious tender plants and shrubs.

There will always be times when a frost is unexpected and catches you out. If you are even remotely concerned, protect your plants anyway or you may lose huge parts of your garden for want of a few minutes spent taking precautions.

How To Find A Catering Equipment Supplier

The range of catering equipment on the market is vast. If you are looking for catering equipment for a new kitchen or to keep your existing well stocked then finding the right utensils and apparatus is vital. Having worked in a kitchen for a number of years I appreciate the value of finding a good, reliable supplier of equipment.

Fast delivery is essential. I have often fallen foul of equipment that has failed on me and needed to be replaced urgently. Fortunately I stumbled across a supplier that was able to send a replacement rapidly. It was an invaluable investment and I have since stuck with that supplier. So how can you find a reputable catering equipment supplier?

Word of mouth is a great start. If you have friends that run kitchens then ask them how they have chosen their supplier and how satisfied they are with them. There are so many companies out there that there is no point sticking for second best. Perhaps your friend will have some good suggestions. If they do then it is well worth trying and if you are not happy do not be afraid to move on.

The next way of finding a good catering equipment supplier is to search the internet. In the past this has been very difficult as search engines were not as effective as they are now but these days you can find a reputable company by tying in a phrase such as 'catering equipment' into a search engine. This will deliver a variety of different companies that offer these products.

The added bonus of this is that you will be able to compare the prices of products from a whole range of different companies without actually having to leave the comfort of your computer. Better still most of these companies will let you make an order and pay online. Many even allow you to track the postal progress of your order online so that you can do everything from your computer. This will go a long way toward alleviating your panic as you wait for that all important piece of kit. Believe me I know how anxious this time can be!

There is an enormous range of products that are covered under the definition of catering equipment. It can literally mean anything that is used to make food or drink. As you can imagine this covers a vast range of tools, implements, apparatus, utensils and machines. In particular it can mean items such as Bain Maries, Boiling Tops, Bratt Pans, Chargrills, Chip Scuttles, Combination Ovens, Commercial Microwaves, Contact Grills, Convection Ovens, Crepe Machines, Flykillers, Fryers, Griddles, Hob Units, Hot Cupboards, Ovens, Pizza Ovens, Potato Ovens, Rice Cookers, Salamander Grills, Solid Tops and Toasters. Admittedly flykillers should not really be considered as implements that you use to create food or drinks - I hope! But the remainder of these items are all beneficial to your kitchen. These are also only a few of the items that you could be benefitting from if you find a good supplier.

Shaun Parker has extensive knowledge of commercial kitchen suppliers, restaurant equipment UK and the different types of catering equipment to make your choices easier.

How To Pick The Perfect Wedding Cake

Your wedding is your special day. Of course, you want everything to be absolute perfection. You have to get yourself the best dress money can buy. You have to have your ceremony and reception in the most gorgeous setting. And, of course, you want to have the best cake ever - by far the most fun part of your wedding planning efforts.

The Look

Common advice dictates that you should not judge a book by its cover. You can ignore such advice in this case. When choosing your wedding cake, the look does matter, more than any other.

When you're picking a wedding cake, take the time to browse through several cake shops and browse through color catalogs to find one that fits your wedding theme and motif perfectly. Better yet, if your budget permits, you can get a cake customized especially for your wedding. This way your cake will seamlessly blend in with the decor, complimenting the overall look and feel of your wedding.

Why is this important? Simply put, your wedding cake is the centerpiece of the reception. It is by far the most unique and the most admired of all your wedding trappings. It's meant to stand out, yes, not as a wallflower, but as the ultimate topper of your wedding decor.

The Taste

Beauty is more than skin deep. This is especially true in wedding cakes. Your cake is gorgeous and it will capture the admiration of your guests, so it's only fitting that it's tastes good as well. Suffice to say, your cake should literally be good enough to eat.

Most cake shops offer samples for tasting purposes. You should definitely take advantage of this opportunity. Take the time to sample different combinations of icing, flavors, and fillings.

So what should you look for in a good wedding cake? First of all, consider the icing. You can go for fondant or royal icing. Your icing should be sweet, but not overly so. You don't want to your icing to dominate the whole cake. If your cake has flowerettes and other decorations on it made of marzipan, fondant, or any other confection, sample those as well.

Next, consider the cake itself. You can have your choice of chiffon, sponge, and many more. These often come in different flavors that you can choose from. A good cake is soft enough to melt in your mouth, but not crumble when cut by a knife or fork. Also, the flavor has to be noticeable, but not overwhelmingly so.

Lastly, consider the cake's filling. Most cake shops also offer different options for this, and you can choose one perfect for your palate. The filling should be creamy and should blend perfectly with the icing and the cake itself. Of course, if you've chosen a tiered cake and are having a hard time figuring out which combination to go for, you can always request a different one for each tier.

Indeed, as hectic as planning a wedding could be, picking a wedding cake takes the strain out of everything else. This is a good opportunity to put the fun back in your wedding planning. Of course, with all the tasting, don't get carried away or else you won't fit in your dress!

Put as much effort in thinking of groomsmen gift ideas as you would in picking your wedding cake. Consider personalized pub signs or Zippo products. Visit ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com today.

Austin BBQ: A Tour of the Town

Deep in the heart of Austin Texas, folks have been cooking up their own brand of BBQ for years and years. Unlike those other BBQ meccas like Memphis and Kansas City, where pulled pork is all the rage, in Austin it's all about the beef. We'll start our tour a bit out of town (about 30 minutes) in Driftwood where The Salt Lick BBQ Restaurant brings the city dwellers out in droves.

Their generous portions of brisket, chicken, sausage, and homemade cobblers have earned The Salt Lick an international reputation. You can order sandwiches, plates, and combos, but we recommend the All You Can Eat option that comes in at less than $15 a person. Making your way back to town, you may pass a gas station that proclaims to have the "wurst BBQ in Texas." Pull in and you'll find yourself and Rudy's Country Store and BBQ. Rudy's is a favorite throughout the state of Texas. Slide on up to the counter and order your brisket, sausage, chicken, and pork by the weight. Your order comes wrapped in wax paper with plenty of Wonder bread to go around. Rudy's also serves breakfast tacos in the mornings and has a wonderful selection of sides including beans, creamed corn, and potato salad.

Back in downtown Austin you can visit the old Weigl Ironworks building, the home of Ironworks BBQ. A favorite haunt of politicians in the heart of downtown, the Ironworks is a great place for people watching. They serve platters and sandwiches with all the sides. Trust us when we say that the beef ribs are worth the trip alone. The Ironworks is also one of the few joints in town to offer an all you can eat salad bar. In the heart of the live music capital of the world, Stubb's BBQ is just as famous as a great music venue as it is a restaurant. The specialties here are the chopped beef sandwiches and chocolate pecan pie. The best time to visit is on Sunday morning, when the sounds of the famous Gospel brunch spill out onto the streets.

Moving a few blocks northwest to Guadalupe St., you'll find Ruby's BBQ filled with hungry students from the University of Texas nearly every day of the week. Their reputation is based on their wonderful chopped beef sandwiches. You can also order the usual selection of meats by the pound. For your non-meat eating friends who may like to tag along, Ruby's is also the only place we know that offers vegetarian jambalaya.

Our tour heads west on Bee Caves Road at The County Line on The Hill. In addition to their fine BBQ, The County Line also offers grilled fish, chicken, and steaks. Founded in 1975, in a converted speak easy, The County Line offers a great view of the Texas hill country. These fine BBQ establishments are just a sampling of the great restaurants all over Austin. Where ever you go you're sure to find cold beer, good food, and great people.

If you are researching the Austin real estate market for a home or condo Ki can help you in your search. His site allows users to perform a Austin mls search online as well as keep up with the market with his real estate blog.

Biodegradable Flower Pot - Environmentally Friendly Products

Currently there are so many non-environmentally friendly products used to manufacture the products we use everyday. Much of these products at the end of their life span will end up littering of environment or filling landfills.

While recycling is being much more a part of our lives in reality the large amount of energy used in the recycling process can outweighs the benefits gained from recycling products, although it does manage to cut back on waste.

An environmentally alternative has seen the biodegradable indutries experience large growth in recent years, as people look to make less of an imprint in the world that we live in and our future generations will be left with.

Biodegradable refers to product that are capable of being broken down and decomposed by biological agents, namely bacteria. This means that products can be broken down in the earth, composts or landfills and have no trace left of whatsoever. This is great when compared to the many years it takes to break down for example a plastic bag or cigarette stub.

A "biodegradable" product has the ability to break down, safely and relatively quickly, by biological means, into the raw materials of nature and disappear into the environment. These products can be solids biodegrading into the soil (which we also refer to as compostable), or liquids biodegrading into water. Biodegradable plastic is intended to break up when exposed to microorganisms (a natural ingredient such as cornstarch or vegetable oil is added to achieve this result).

Sustainable disposal of any product requires that its wastes return to the earth and are able to biodegrade. Nature biodegrades everything it makes back into basic building blocks, so that new living things can be made from the old. Every resource made by nature returns to nature-plants and animals biodegrade, even raw crude oil will degrade when exposed to water, air, and the necessary salts. Nature has perfected this system-we just need to learn how to participate in it.

By the time many resources are turned into products, however, they have been altered by industry in such a way that they are unrecognizable to the microorganisms and enzymes that return natural materials to their basic building blocks. Crude oil, for example, will biodegrade in its natural state, but once it is turned into plastic, it becomes an unsustainable pollution problem. Instead of returning to the cycle of life, these products simply pollute and litter our land, air, and water.

One great biodegradable product we have come across on the internet is Enviroarc's biodegradable pots. Using moulded bamboo fibre they are manufacturing a non polluting pot that is fully biodegradable. This is great news when you look at the million of plastic pots that are currently used in the world today, and they look like a viable environmentally alternative to the earth damaging plastic pots that are current used.

The pots are available in a wide range of colours and look great for use in the home or the house. On top of the biodegradable pot, they also manufacture a range of other biodegradable products from the same process.

For more information you can take a look at their Biodegradable Flower Pot on their website: Enviroarc biodegradable products This article was written by John Harley http://biodegradables.org

African Food And Cuisines

Africa is perhaps known more for it's African Safaris and white sandy beaches but when it comes to food, African food can easily hold it's own among the best known cuisines in the world. African food is generally quite gentle with the likes of snails and rodents in west Africa, snakes in central Africa, monkeys, cats and dogs eaten in Nigeria and Ghana, termites, or even locusts eaten in Uganda being exceptions rather than a rule.

The traveler to Africa you will often find foods like pizza, burgers or at least good attempts at coming with something close to pizzas and burgers chicken and fries in most towns in Africa.

Most African travelers often find themselves counting familiar brands in Africa the likes of burger King, coca cola and many more. Americans are notorious at this.

As an African Safaris traveler should you want a taste of the local cuisine you will often find a lot and a variety depending on where you are in Africa.

By far the best known of Africa's finest traditional dishes are Moroccan, Ethiopian and Swahili dishes. Morocco offers tajines, couscous (possibly getting its inspiration from West Africa, where it's traditionally steamed in baobab leaves), great tasting soups and scrumptious sweets. In East Africa and along the coast Swahili cooking rules supreme, making loving use of herds and spices introduced into Africa from Arabia, India and the Far East, with seafood being especially good.

Ethiopian cuisine is in a class of its own: injera as it is known is the staple and is a large pancake from which diners which they use to scoop up dollops of highly spiced stews.

Seafood is prepared differently in different regions. In Zanzibar it is prepared spicy, in coconut sauce or stiffed with vegetables and cooked in tomato, in Senegal. In South Africa, Brits can truly feel at home with fish and chips off course minus the newspaper. In many parts of Africa especially in the countryside it's best to eat fish close to the places where they are caught.

For the meat eaters or carnivores as they like to be called, Kenya's carnivore restaurant in Nairobi is a great place to indulge. Here you can try game meat from impala steaks, hippo, ostrich to crocodile burgers which by the way taste either like fish or chicken depending on what the crocodiles which are often breed on crocodile farms were feed on.

In southern Africa namely South Africa, Namibia and Botswana popular barbecues feature all kinds of meat and Boerwurst sausages which are often washed down with good beer.

In rural Kenya smoked wild birds are also a popular with locals.

For those who are daring, South Africa offers culinary challenges from caterpillars fried to sheep and chicken heads all of which are reputed by locals anf foreigners alike to be delicious. For the not so daring, there are other indigenous delicacies such as biltong which consists of dried, salted meat, bobotie which is simply a much-improved version of Shepherd's pie and boerewors which is hand-made farm sausages, often grilled on an open flame.

In south Africa too as in other parts of Africa, those who prefer to play it safe will find that most restaurants offer a familiar global menu - which includes anything from hamburgers to sushi to Chinese in Chinese restaurants which are quite popular to spaghetti bolognaise.

Counting The Calories In Coffee

These days, it seems like everyone is on some type of diet. Low fat diets, low carb diets, and low calorie diets are the most popular diets with the American public today. With low calorie diets, the number of calories in every item that the individual eats, even the calories in coffee, is added together to make the individual aware of how many calories they are eating during the day. Knowing how many calories are being consumed helps the individual manage their diet and reduce the amount of calories they eat over the course of a day.

Variables That Affect The Calories In Coffee

Counting these calories correctly can be difficult. Take the calories in coffee for instance. The calories in a cup of coffee can differ widely from person to person because there are many variables that can change the number of calories in your cup. One major difference that can change the number of calories in coffee is the size of the cup. One person may define a cup of coffee as an 8-oz mug full, while another may classify it as the 12-oz Styrofoam cup that they pick up every morning on the way to the office. To get an accurate count of the calories in coffee, a standard measurement is 8 fluid ounces or 1 Cup.

Another variable that affects the amount of calories in coffee is the specific type of the coffee. Flavored coffees generally have many more calories than a cup of plain black coffee. Differences can also range between specific brands and styles, such as Columbian Roast or Breakfast Blend. The number of calories in coffee brands is typically indicated on the label of the coffee container for consumer review.

The amount of calories in coffee has a lot to do with how it is prepared for consumption. Calories are added with each spoonful of sugar or creamer used to make the coffee more palatable. Just remember, as more things are added to the coffee, the calorie count rises. One of the additions that add the most calories is whitening agents such as cream, milk, or creamer. Depending on the amount used, an individual can add between 40 and 90 calories to eat cup of coffee with whitening agents alone.

Many of the additives used to flavor coffee, such as vanilla syrup or chocolate syrup, can also add to the calories in coffee. These flavored syrups can add 70 calories or more per shot added to the coffee. Some of these flavorings do come in sugar-free varieties, so opting for the sugar free flavorings will reduce the amount of calories in coffee drinks. By remembering that these agents all add calories to your cup of coffee, you can effectively manage your diet and reduce the amount of calories in your coffee.

A Brief History About Pillsbury

It is unlikely that in 1872, when Charles Pillsbury founded the baking products company that bears his name, he foresaw that someday his moniker would be largely associated with a small animated character with an annoying giggle.

Charles and his father, George, had joined with his uncle John Pillsbury to operate a milling plant in 1869, and Charles had used his share of the profits to start C. A. Pillsbury and Company, which sold cereal and baking products with increasing success from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, including pancake mixes, cereal, and bakery items. But it was in 1965 that Pillsbury graduated from a grocery store staple brand to a pop culture sensation with the introduction in company commercials of Poppin' Fresh, aka the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Dispatched to push Pillsbury's line of refrigerated cookie and biscuit doughs, Poppin' Fresh, a diminutive humanoid blob of dough sporting a cheery smile and a chef's hat, was within three years recognized by an astounding 87 percent of all consumers and is today consistently rated as the number one food character, beating out such luminaries as Starkist's Charlie the Tuna and the Green Giant. Poppin' Fresh's signature giggling falsetto was created for the initial series of commercials by the legendary voice actor Paul Frees, previously known as the gravelly Russian voice of Boris Badenov on TV's The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

Since then, other actors have played the voice of Poppin' Fresh, such as Jeff Bergman, the voice of Charlie the Tuna, and today, JoBe Cerny.

One measure of Poppin' Fresh's success is that few consumers probably remember that until his appearance, doughboy was heard only as an antiquated slang term for a soldier or infantryman. There is controversy about the origin of doughboy in the military sense, but one certainty is that the term is much older than most people would suspect. Although it gained currency in popular use during World War I, doughboy first showed up in print in 1847, and General George Armstrong Custer's widow mentioned the term in her memoirs, written in 1887, explaining that "doughboys" were small doughnuts often served to sailors aboard ship. According to Mrs. Custer, the term was subsequently applied to infantrymen because the large brass buttons on their uniforms reminded someone of these naval doughboys. Lending support to at least the culinary aspect of Mrs. Custer's theory is the fact that doughboy has meant "a boiled flour dumpling" to sailors since about 1685.

Today, the doughboy receives more than 200 letters a week, and Pillsbury, over 1500 requests for autographed pictures of the cute moniker.

Why Should You Join A Wine Club?

Not sure what wines to buy? Always buy the same thing? Looking for a regular supply of wines direct to your door? If the answer is yes to any of the above, then you should consider joining a wine club. Wine clubs have become increasingly popular in recent years and offer a number of benefits when it comes to buying wine.

The main advantage of joining a wine club is that you get to enjoy a regular supply (monthly or quarterly depending on the wine club) of expertly selected wines. Unlike a supermarket or wine shop when you are faced with rows and rows of wines and unsure what to buy, with a wine club all the research is done for you. You get to taste a whole host of award winning wines, customer favourites, pre-releases and undiscovered gems that you otherwise may not have chosen. What's more, you'll be sure to have a bottle of wine to hand, perfect for every occasion. Another advantage of joining a wine club is that you will receive detailed information about each of the wines. This can help when it comes to picking out wines in the future (particularly if you are new to wine), as you get to learn more about what you are drinking and the winemakers who produce the wines. Some wine clubs encourage you to rate or comment on the wine.

This can be useful as you get to remember your favourites and you also get to see what other customers think of the wines before you taste them.Joining a wine club is one of the easiest ways of buying wine.

As you sit back and enjoy your wines, you can rest assured that the hard work is being done to prepare your next wine club case for you. And with delivery direct to door, you don't have to lift a finger. Some wine clubs offer an incentive to encourage you to join, such as a price reduction or free gift.

Once you've joined, you'll also probably benefit from other savings such as discounted cases or exclusive promotions. Virgin Wines online wine club goes the extra mile and offers a money back guarantee, so if you find that you don't like a wine that has been selected for you, you can get your money back. In addition, as a member of a wine club, you may receive invitations to tasting sessions or events. These can be a great way of meeting other people interested in wine, chatting to the experts who select your wines and trying new ranges. Finally, with many wine clubs to choose from, it's worth picking one that offers you freedom and flexibility.

So if you decide that you want to skip a case or modify the selection where you don't like a wine, this shouldn't be a problem.A wine club is a great option if you are looking to learn more about wine and they are a really convenient way of keeping stocked up with wine.

Wine clubs do vary from one to another, so it's best to check the details and terms first to ensure that you choose the best one for you.

Choosing A Holiday Wine

You can go about choosing a holiday wine in many different ways. However, with the stress of the holidays already a huge burden, why add more stress when trying to choose a wine. You should make choosing a holiday wine as simple as possible.

Start out by telling yourself that you do not have to be perfect. Your guests are going to appreciate the fact that you just took time to consider a wine instead of choosing whatever you happened to grab off the shelf. You can be assured that even if your wine isn’t the amazing, awe inspiring choice that you desired your guests are still going to be happy. That is all that really matters, isn’t it?

Still, you want to choose a good wine. Choosing a bad wine can really cast a shadow over your whole affair. You will notice that things are not perfect and that can ruin your whole holiday since you are trying so hard to make it a wonderful occasion.

It is time to rest easy. You can choose a wine that will not disappoint, even if you are no wine connoisseur. There are some basics that you can keep in mind to help you with your choice. By knowing the basics you will take away the stress of choosing the perfect wine and be able to be more assured that you will make the right choice.

There is an old stand by in wine that comes in quite helpful. It is that red wine suits red meat and white wine suits white meat. Basically you can use this as a good starting point. If you are serving beef then check out the red wines and if you are serving turkey then check out the white wines. However, do not get lost in this alone.

You need to read labels because your ultimate goal is going to be to choose a wine that compliments what you are serving. You do not want something that is too powerful, nor do you want something that will be washed out by what you are serving. You should try to find out a little about your wine options and see what flavor best compliments what you are serving.

You may even find yourself choosing a couple different wines because you find a couple that you think will work wonderfully with your meal. This will give your guests the ultimate choice. That is always a nice option at a holiday dinner table. After all, everyone has different taste. What you think is perfect may not be another person’s idea of perfection. Having a couple options leaves the door open that you will have something that will suit each of your guests.

You should be able to take the two basic pieces of advice above about the type of wine and the idea of complimenting tastes and choose a good holiday wine with confidence. Just remember that having the perfect wine is nice, but having a wonderful time is much more important. So, have fun with your guests and just enjoy the good wine you have chosen.
