English Tea - Origin of a Winning Tradition

Whether you are looking forward to a serving of tea at afternoon tea, using English tea can be an fantastically pleasing addition to your party or in some instances even the party itself.

Some individuals might think that these two occasions are both one and the same, but as a matter of fact, afternoon tea and high tea rituals are most certainly not the same thing and originate from totally different origins.

In this article we will explore the differences between each kind of traditional English tea ceremony and discuss their origin, traditions, typical time of occasion and original purposes.

Afternoon Tea

The English tea ceremony tradition goes back to the 19th century England and was began by the Duchess of Bedford. These tea times were the first kind of conventional afternoon English tea rituals that actually started as an in-between occasion when lunch was over but dinner still felt like it was a long way off, and there was a desire for something in-between.

The assortment of tea was typically served with a very small meal of bread and butter, and if it wasn't for this afternoon meal, the Duchess along with her high society of lady friends would have had to wait until well after nightfall for the next meal and this little feast satisfied that hungry space in-between.

Since that time and up until this day, the afternoon English tea ritual has truly progressed to incorporate numerous other foods such as pastries and scones, however the timing of the event has consistently remained much the same.

High Tea

The event of a high tea is very often referred to as a similar event just like afternoon tea is, nevertheless they are very different indeed. It's possible high tea sounds like a more proper term, yet this traditional English tea ceremony is in reality the one that was practiced and was started by the common folk back in 19th century England.

The tradition of afternoon tea was already very popular, however the less fortunate people also required a tradition to accompany their tea time. In place of an earlier tea time schedule, their tea time was set aside to happen closer to dinner or sometimes even in place of dinner. In fact, such was the actual origin of the ceremony itself.

This tradition of English tea was somewhat established so that it could take the place of the rather boring and typical meal with an event of celebration as well as enjoyment of tea, and different than the afternoon tea time of the rich, this event happened around dusk and incorporated much more filling foods such as cheese, meat, eggs and similar items. Additionally, both male and female were included in this meal unlike the afternoon tea ceremony.

Tea Tree - 3 Amazing Variations of This Venerable Tree

A tee tree, which is also well-known as a ti tree, is commonly used to refer to all related or possibly even unrelated series of trees which grow the leaves that are used to create this species of trees that may or may not contain the leaves from which conventional tea is even derived.

Nevertheless, they all have been labeled as such due to the fact that, at some point in time, numerous people have utilized leaves of these type of trees for the process of making tea.

That is to say people as well as groups have taken these leaves from the tea tree and soaked them in water so that they could make a tea like product. Although there are many types that are included in the tea tree classification, for the sake of space, we will discuss three in this article as examples; the leptospermum tree, the kanuka tree, and camelia sinensis, a true tea tree.

Kanuka

This type of tea tree is situated in New Zealand and is actually more like a shrub then a type of tree. This tea tree can grow very large and is plentiful across the landscape of New Zealand, and because of the little beautiful white flowers it has, tea trees such as these also develop into a beautiful backdrop across much of the landscape.

Some equate the appearance of a large grouping of kanuka trees to that of a snowy hillside in the winter. Despite the fact that the leaves are quite often utilized for tea making, this type of tea tree in reality only makes an herbal tea product, so technically speaking it is not actually a true tea making tea tree.

Leptospermum

Similar to the kanuka tea tree, the leptospermum more accurately resembles a bush as opposed to an actual tree. Similar to the kanuka, this tea tree is primarily located in New Zealand. However, it is mostly predominant in Australia, and yet just as similar to the kanuka tree, the leptospemum leaves create an herbal tea and not the actual true tea type of white, green, black/red or oolong. In addition to utilizing these tea leaves to make a tea like product, for a very long time natives have used the flowers nectar to create honey.

Camellia Sinensis

The camellia sinensis is one of the true tea tree out of which all teas, green, black/red, white and oolong are originally plucked from. It is primarily based on the eventual oxidation process that influences the final product. However nuances in flavor are also very relevant to the area of each camellia sinensis tea tree. This tea tree is indigenous to Asian regions, however today they can be located and are produced all around the world. All that is actually required is a small amount of tropical weather so that camellia sinensis can grow.

Uncover the Secrets of Rich Black Tea

One of the teas that is included in the four group classification of basic teas is black tea. The other three teas are white, green, and oolong. It is considered a true tea, which is not similar to the so-called teas such as herbal, in that the leaves themselves are grown from the camelia sinensis, which is the one true tea tree.

This article elaborates on the kind of areas in which black tea is manufactured and cultivated as well as the various methods in which people typically serve and enjoy black tea.

Cultivating And Growing Black Tea

The regions that commonly manufacture black tea are those that have high altitude areas and some that have a tropical climate, and this may include various areas such as the rainforest region and South America, for example. However traditionally, countries in the Asian region are the prime hosting grounds for cultivating and growing of the tea trees in the production of the teas for consumerism.

While a segment of this market still is controlled by the Asian countries, you will find this tea is now distributed further throughout the world and numerous countries now extensively participate in growing and marketing this tea and products that contain black tea.

Serving and Enjoying Black Tea

There are numerous different ways to serve this type of tea; it can be served hot, which is a very common method in the Asian countries or in restaurants that are influenced by the Asian culture throughout the world. When it is served hot, people might choose to prepare it with milk and/or sugar or other condiments.

Additionally, there are others that prefer honey and some even enjoy spices such as cloves or cinnamon. When served cold or with ice, people typically try out similar additives to their tea. It is the flexibility that makes black tea a number one alternative amongst tea drinkers.

An additional popular black tea based drink is that of chai tea. Even though Chai tea can be made utilizing any of the different variety of teas, the traditional way it is done is to use black tea. Chai tea is flexible in that it can be served either hot or cold, and milk and cream is typically incorporated into it to give it a lighter consistency. In addition, various spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom are utilized to spice it up. Then honey or sometimes sugar which can be either processed or raw, is added to it to sweeten it to the drinkers preference.

Is It Organic? Hydroponic Gardening

Some organic gardeners believe that hydroponic gardening can't be organic because you don't use soil. How can you have an organic garden without rich, loamy soil? Good soil is at the heart of organic gardening. Organic hydroponic gardening does exist, however, and has some advantages over conventional organic gardening.

Soil-less Gardening

Organic hydroponic gardening is organic gardening without the soil. Organic hydroponic gardening relies on water to provide the nutrients needed for plant growth. Organic hydroponic gardening still requires a growing medium; most plants won't grow without something solid to put their roots into. The growing medium is not the source of nutrients, however; it's as sterile as a chemically fertilized monoculture wheat field. The growing medium is simply a structure to root the plants into and to hold the nutrient-filled water.

Organic hydroponic gardening growing medium can be any organic material. Vermiculite and perilte are often used. (Be careful when handling vermiculite, as it is a source of asbestos.) Straw, cotton, plant fiber or any other organic material can be used.

The Secret is in the Water

Organic hydroponic gardening relies on dissolving substances in water to provide nutrients for the plants. Because it is organic, anything that goes into the water must be organic. Compost tea is frequently used in organic hydroponic gardening. It is made by soaking compost in water and straining out the solid material. The rich nutrients dissolve in the water and are used to feed the plants.

Manure tea is also used in hydroponic gardening. Manure tea can be a source of bacterial contamination of the produce, including contamination with lethal varieties of E. coli. Manure should be well-composted or sterilized before making manure tea. You make it the same way you make compost tea; by dissolving the manure in water and straining out the solid material.

Other organic additives that can be used are seaweed and fish emulsion. There are no special fertilizers because you continually circulate and refresh the nutrient mixture.

Special Uses

Organic hydroponic gardening has a niche in the organic gardening landscape. It fits anywhere that there is no soil available or the soil won't support plant growth.

Organic hydroponic gardening is used to grow crops in parts of the world where the soil has been over-farmed and is too depleted to grow food. Organic hydroponic gardening is used in outer space living and will almost certainly be part of any attempt to colonize the moon or another planet. Organic hydroponic gardening is being used for urban gardens on rooftops. This enables urbanites to grow healthy food in wasted space. Rooftops can't always support the weight of soil for traditional organic gardening.

Hydroponic gardening can be organic. You don't get to play in the dirt, which is the part many organic gardeners love, but you do get to grow healthy, sustainable, organic food with organic hydroponic gardening.

Simple Tips for Selecting a Food Processor

Food Processors are fantastic inventions and can be a great deal of help to any home cook. When you decide to invest in a food processor be sure that you are actually going to use it. There are plenty of people with kitchen cabinets brimming with appliances that seemed practical at the time of purchase but are now nothing more than expensive dust collectors.

One of the benefits of investing in a food processor is that it can actually replace many of the appliances that you have stored away. If you purchase one with versatile attachments it can take the place of mixers, blenders, grinders, and other kitchen gadgets.

These days food processors have so many different attachments that you don't even need to buy the most expensive one to get all the benefits. The one thing that you do need to decide on is the size of the processor you want to purchase.

When doing your shopping consider the amount of food you prepare at one time, if you a large family or are a professional caterer you may want to consider the larger models. These have mixing bowls that can hold up to twenty cups of food. On the other hand mini models may be more suited for your lifestyle and cooking needs, with a capacity of seven to ten cups.

One tip that can save you preparation time is if you get a food processor with as wide of an insert tube as possible. The wider the tube is the less time you have to spend cutting down your food to fit it. Therefore you can shave some extra minutes off your prep time.

The other thing to consider when purchasing a food processor is the necessary attachments you want on it. You obviously want the standard blade and disc attachments but there can be some fancy extras.

You can get ones that have a dough blade, an egg whip, a julienne disc, French fry disc, citrus and non citrus juicers, and more. Again don't waste money on food processors with all these extra features if you know that you're never going to use them.

Another thing that you may want to keep in mind when selecting your food processor is the amount of power it has. Any one you find should have sufficient power to perform routine tasks but if you need it for more demanding food processing there are professional models that have over 600 watts of power, which should get the job done.

Finally make sure your processor is easy to clean, most are dishwasher safe but some are easier than others. If you buy one that is a pain to clean you'll be a lot less likely to use it.

If you keep these simple tips in mind when shopping for a food processing appliance you should end up with one that most aptly fits your needs on a budget you can afford. You can also look for sales going on for your favorite brands or find ones with instant rebates. A quality food processor can save you tons of time in the kitchen and can make for a great gift to a friend or family member that enjoys cooking.

How To Find A Sugar Cookie Recipe

Sugar cookies are versatile, easy to make and are perhaps the most popular cookie on the planet! The first sugar cookie recipe can be traced back to the mid 18th century and has gone through a number of transformations over the years.

The Ingredients Make The Difference

You would think that one recipe is rather close in ingredients and preparation to another. However, nothing could be farther from the truth and is the reason why many people stick with their "tried and true" cookie recipe that was handed down from grandma. It can be quite mind-boggling sifting through hundreds of recipes for sugar cookies on the internet or even through your cookbooks.

The primary ingredient, sugar, is not cut and dried when it comes to a sugar cookie recipe. You could use the regular granulated white sugar; however there are super fine granulated organic sugar versions that could be incorporated into a recipe and even brown sugar, a southern favorite. The flavoring extract often used in a sugar cookie recipe is vanilla, but you could substitute it for almond extract or even butter extract for a totally new taste.

Even the binding part (the ingredients that make the flour and sugar stick together) of any cookie recipe can be vastly different. Some recipes use lard while other recipes use vegetable shortening, butter or a combination of all of them.

Butter is typically used with most recipes to give the cookie a nice flavor. If the sugar cookie recipe calls for lard in addition to the butter, you can expect the cookie to be crisp and delightfully crumby. However, if the recipe uses vegetable shortening with the butter, you can expect a crisp, yet chewy cookie instead.

Your Recipe Options

Practically everyone has had a sugar cookie in some form or another. Therefore, by deciding the type of sugar cookie you want, you could greatly reduce the number of recipes you may weed through in finding just the right one. For instance, there are sugar cookie recipes for: * Cut-outs * Drop cookies * Refrigerator cookies * Cookies from a mold or press

A drop sugar cookie recipe is rather quick and easy with you just "dropping" the dough by spoonfuls on a baking sheet. A refrigerator cookie involves you refrigerating the dough, sometimes rolling it into a log shape so that it is easy to cut slices for baking.

Cookie cutouts involve rolling out the dough onto a floured cutting board and using cookie cutters to make shapes. With a press or mold, the dough is conformed into a certain shape.

The bottom line is that each recipe will produce a slightly different cookie. The only thing that should always stay the same is how you bake it. Always use a baking sheet with a sheet of parchment paper covering it as this not only keeps cookies from sticking, but you will rarely have a problem with burning your cookies.

Sugar cookies are truly one of the best. They also come with more recipe options that you might have first imagined. Use the guidelines above to find the sugar cookie recipe that is right for you.
